76 Acres Near Wagener Now Permanently Protected

The Aiken Land Conservancy is pleased to announce the permanent protection of 76.1 acres in eastern Aiken County through the completion of the Mayadinya-in-the-Pines Conservation Easement. The project recently closed, ensuring that this ecologically significant landscape will be safeguarded forever.

The property contains over 71 acres of habitat, including 60.4 acres of upland pine forest. These native habitats provide vital ecological functions and support rich biodiversity. Nine wildlife species listed in the South Carolina State Wildlife Action Plan (SWAP) have already been documented on the property, and the high-quality habitat offers strong potential for additional species of conservation concern. Protecting this land meaningfully advances both regional and statewide conservation priorities.

The property also provides approximately 0.7 miles of scenic viewshed along Bluffwood Road, helping preserve the rural character of this corridor and enhancing the public’s experience as they travel through the area, a valuable conservation benefit often overlooked but deeply appreciated by the community.

The landowners have designated much of the property as a Special Natural Area and intend to restore its native sandhill habitat through the careful use of prescribed fire. Their commitment to long-term stewardship was instrumental in making this project possible.

This conservation easement was supported by a generous grant award from the South Carolina Conservation Bank, with early project expenses assisted by ALC’s Houghton Fund, a clear example of how community gifts directly support the protection of land in our region.

ALC is also in conversation with neighboring landowners and hopes this will be the first of several conserved properties in this emerging conservation region near Wagener.
