Caring for the Land Today—and Tomorrow
Stewardship is at the heart of everything we do at the Aiken Land Conservancy. Stewardship is about more than protecting land, it is about maintaining and enhancing the natural character and ecological health of conserved properties for generations to come.
Annual Monitoring & Reporting
As part of our commitment to protecting conserved lands and national accreditation, we are required to conduct annual monitoring visits for all of our conservation properties, both private and public. This annual reporting ensures that the conservation values of these properties are intact through time.
Each year, our Stewardship Coordinator will reach out to landowners to schedule a monitoring visit. We typically contact landowners by email or phone to arrange a time that works best. During the visit, we assess the property to confirm that conservation values are being conserved, document any changes, and answer landowner questions if we are monitoring land that is not ours.
Landowners are welcome to join us during the monitoring visit to walk the property and share updates or observations. However, if a landowner is unavailable or prefers not to attend, we can complete the visit independently with respect for their time and property.
Our goal is to make this process as simple and straightforward as possible, while ensuring the long-term protection of these special places.
Need Conservation Boundary Signs?
We encourage all landowners to proudly display ALC conservation boundary signs on their property to help mark and protect the conserved areas. These signs not only highlight your commitment to conservation but also help others recognize the important work we’re doing together, helping to drum up additional interest in conservation.
To request your signs, please contact our Executive Director, Peter, at peter@conserveaiken.org.

Meet Our Stewardship Coordinator
Riley Telkamp is a graduate of Iowa State University, where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Biology. She previously served as a Conservation Intern with the Aiken Land Conservancy, where she supported stewardship and outreach efforts, assisted with prescribed burns in longleaf pine ecosystems, met with landowners, and gained hands-on experience in land management on conserved properties across the region.
She has a strong background in biological research and field-based conservation through research positions with Augusta University, Tennessee Technological University, and Iowa State University. Her experience includes aquatic and avian habitat assessments, ecological data collection and analysis, species monitoring, and laboratory research supporting long-term scientific studies.
Riley discovered her passion for environmental science while working in Dr. Grace Wilkinson’s limnology laboratory at Iowa State University, where she studied freshwater ecosystems and the microscopic organisms that support them. That experience strengthened her interest in ecological systems and reinforced her appreciation for the role of clear communication, collaboration, and scientific rigor in effective conservation work.
As Stewardship Coordinator, Riley plays a key role in helping ALC uphold the conservation values of the lands we protect. Her experience in ecological research, field monitoring, and applied conservation strengthens our ability to ensure that conserved properties remain healthy, resilient, and well-managed for generations to come.
