Stewards of the Land

Caring for the Land Today—and Tomorrow

Stewardship is at the heart of everything we do at the Aiken Land Conservancy. Stewardship is about more than protecting land, it is about maintaining and enhancing the natural character and ecological health of conserved properties for generations to come.

Annual Monitoring & Reporting

As part of our commitment to protecting conserved lands and national accreditation, we are required to conduct annual monitoring visits for all of our conservation properties, both private and public. This annual reporting ensures that the conservation values of these properties are intact through time.

Each year, our Stewardship Coordinator will reach out to landowners to schedule a monitoring visit. We typically contact landowners by email or phone to arrange a time that works best. During the visit, we assess the property to confirm that conservation values are being conserved, document any changes, and answer landowner questions if we are monitoring land that is not ours.

Landowners are welcome to join us during the monitoring visit to walk the property and share updates or observations. However, if a landowner is unavailable or prefers not to attend, we can complete the visit independently with respect for their time and property.

Our goal is to make this process as simple and straightforward as possible, while ensuring the long-term protection of these special places.

Need Conservation Boundary Signs?

We encourage all landowners to proudly display ALC conservation boundary signs on their property to help mark and protect the conserved areas. These signs not only highlight your commitment to conservation but also help others recognize the important work we’re doing together, helping to drum up additional interest in conservation.

To request your signs, please contact our Stewardship Coordinator, Ryne, at ryne@conserveaiken.org.

Meet Our Stewardship Coordinator

Ryne is a graduate of Clemson University, where he studied conservation area management and wildlife biology. He comes to ALC from The Orianne Society, a well-respected organization focused on researching and conserving reptile and amphibian populations and their habitats across the Southeastern United States. During his time there, Ryne worked on conservation efforts for the declining Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake and other native reptile species, as well as habitat quality assessments on public lands across the Coastal Plains of Georgia.

He also worked as a field biologist for several renowned herpetological conservation organizations, including the University of Georgia’s Savannah River Ecology Lab and Marshall University. These roles sparked Ryne’s interest and passion for restoring native habitats across the Southeast, particularly sandhill ecosystems. His hands-on experience and specialized knowledge in habitat management make him an invaluable asset to our team.

As Stewardship Coordinator, Ryne plays a key role in helping us uphold the conservation values of the Aiken Land Conservancy. His expertise in Southeastern natural resource conservation strengthens our ability to ensure that protected lands remain healthy, resilient, and thriving for generations to come.

Stewardship Partners

Caring for conserved lands is a collaborative effort—and we're proud to work alongside dedicated professionals and organizations who help us steward these special places for future generations. Whether through habitat restoration, prescribed fire, infrastructure improvements, or ecological expertise, these partners play a vital role in protecting and enhancing the lands under our care.

Aiken Prescribed Fire Cooperative

The Aiken Prescribed Fire Cooperative, which counts many of our landowner partners as members, supports landowners in the region hoping to implement prescribed fire on their properties. They have joined forces with ALC to put hundreds of acres of fire on the ground, mostly through landowners helping other landowners.

Burning for Birds Collaborative

Aiken Land Conservancy is proud to be a partner in the Burning for Birds Collaborative, a multi-state initiative uniting five partners across the Southeast. This effort engages private landowners in ecologically beneficial prescribed fires, supporting fire-adapted ecosystems and benefiting declining bird species in Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina.

Bartlett Tree Experts

Our partnership with Bartlett Tree Experts reflects a shared commitment to preserving Aiken’s natural beauty and ecological health. Together with the City of Aiken and Aiken Streetscapes, Bartlett plays a key role in maintaining the historic live oaks along South Boundary Avenue through expert pruning and ongoing tree care.

Cornell Lab of Ornithology's Land Trust Bird Conservation Initiative

ALC has partnered with the Cornell Lab of Ornithology's Land Trust Bird Conservation Initiative on numerous projects, all revolving around restoring habitat for declining bird species. Hundreds of acres of habitat have been restored through this partnership, with documented increases in rare bird species as a result.

The Longleaf Alliance

We are proud to recognize The Longleaf Alliance as a regional conservation partner. Their commitment to restoring and conserving the longleaf pine ecosystem aligns seamlessly with our own conservation goals. The Longleaf Alliance has supported the Aiken Land Conservancy through prescribed burns on several of our conservation properties and by contributing to grant-related efforts. Notably, they played a critical role in protecting Shaws Creek Preserve by covering due diligence expenses associated with the conservation easement.

Malcolm C. Damuth Foundation

The Foundation has generously supported our efforts to reintroduce prescribed fire on local conservation lands. Their commitment helps restore and maintain the health of fire-adapted ecosystems, ensuring that native plants and wildlife can thrive.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program

ALC has partnered with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program to bring land management funding to the Shaws Creek Preserve, where restoration activities are improving habitats for a range of listed wildlife species.
