McGovern Tract

21.2 Acres

Historic Property

Protected in April 2026, the McGovern Tract is a 21.2-acre property located just northeast of downtown Aiken. The property is home to the fully restored Dawson-Vanderhorst House, which dates to 1785 and is recognized as the oldest known standing home in Aiken County. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1976, the house reflects an important piece of the region’s early history.

Beyond its historic significance, the property offers scenic views along approximately 0.3 miles of roadside frontage and includes a 4.7-acre stand of mature longleaf pine.

This project was made possible through the vision and stewardship of the landowners, Carolyn and Jay McGovern, with support from the South Carolina Conservation Bank.
