The Shealy Farms Conservation Easement protects 60 acres of open pasture and remnant longleaf pine sandhill habitat in northern Aiken County. The property provides important habitat for wildlife, protects a state-threatened plant species, and includes scenic viewshed and important aquifer recharge areas.
The Shealy Farms Conservation Easement permanently protects 60 acres in northern Aiken County, including 20 acres of open pasture and 40 acres of remnant longleaf pine sandhill habitat. The property provides important habitat for grassland birds and other species of conservation concern, including Eastern meadowlarks, loggerhead shrikes, and Southeastern American kestrels.
The 40-acre sandhill habitat is designated as a Special Natural Area and supports longleaf pines, large turkey oaks, and sandhill rosemary, a state-threatened shrub rarely observed in Aiken County. The property’s sandy soils also provide important aquifer recharge areas, while 0.3 miles of protected viewshed help maintain the rural character of the surrounding landscape.
The protection of Shealy Farms adds to a growing network of conserved lands in the Wagener area and helps preserve the natural and rural character of northern Aiken County for future generations.
