Aiken Land Conservancy Hike Series: Barnwell State Park Migratory Bird Day

Join us for a special event to celebrate Migratory Bird Day on Saturday, May 30th at Barnwell State Park and to take a closer look at the positive impacts of a recent prescribed burn made possible through the Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s Burning for Birds Conservation Collaborative.
We visited the Fern Hill Trail last month but, this time, we will survey for birds in another burn unit. This area is within a part of the park not usually open to the public, and contains beautiful longleaf pine sandhill that had fire reintroduced into it back in February. We will learn more about new features that eBird and Merlin offers, and see as many of the many fascinating bird species found in the region as possible.
Parking is available along Highway 3, across from the entrance to the state park. Restrooms are available near the state park office.
Where: Barnwell State Park, along Highway 3 immediately south of the park entrance.
When: Saturday, May 30th from 9-10:30 AM
What to Bring: Water, long pants, sturdy shoes, and binoculars.
Trail Condition and Distance: We will hike off trail through a natural sandhill that has been minimally impacted. Some hiking will take place on sandy forest roads and other hiking will be within the recently burned sandhill. Some bushwhacking may be involved.
