Aiken Land Conservancy Hike Series: Heggie’s Rock

For our last Aiken Land Conservancy Hike Series hike of the season, join Aiken Land Conservancy Executive Director, Peter Kleinhenz, and Birds Georgia Conservation Programs Manager, Heather Levy, for the unique opportunity to visit one of Georgia’s most significant natural areas, Heggie’s Rock.
This granitic flatrock, located just outside of Augusta, harbors numerous rare plant and animal species, including some found nowhere else on Earth. It is a designated National Natural Landmark and considered to be one of Georgia’s most significant habitats for rare plants. We will explore this amazing natural community and learn about how it was protected, why it is so special, and we will try to see some of the species that call it home.
Thanks to the cooperation of the Georgia Chapter of The Nature Conservancy, we are able to showcase some of the special features of their fragile preserve to the participants of this hike. We will walk between 2 and 3 miles total, and will be on uneven ground most of the time. No facilities exist on site, but bathrooms are available at the meeting location.
Due to the sensitive nature of the site, we ask that only those 12 and older attend. No pets are permitted.
We will meet at the parking lot by the tennis courts at Patriots Park located at 5445 Columbia Road, Grovetown, Georgia 30813. We will then carpool to the preserve in as few vehicles as possible.
Space is limited to 25 people.
